DAC presents
ARTISTS OF HAWAI'I 2023
- A JURIED EXHIBITION -

On Display November 3-25, 2023 at Downtown Art Center

With Juror Tyler Cann
Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art
at Honolulu Museum of Art

Downtown Art Center presents ARTISTS OF HAWAIʻI 2023, an updated version of the state's largest, longest-running all-media juried exhibition designed to showcase the best of Hawaiʻi's contemporary art. The exhibition, slated for Downtown Art Center’s Main Gallery from November 3-25, will include art in a variety of media created by artists living in the state of Hawaiʻi, and will be juried in 2023 by guest juror Tyler Cann, Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at HoMA. Artists of all ages living in the state of Hawaiʻi, working in all media are eligible to submit artwork.

JUROR: Tyler Cann
Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA)
Tyler Cann joins HoMA from the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) in Ohio, where he served most recently as acting chief curator, director of exhibitions and Pizzuti family curator of contemporary art. Prior to that, he served as curator of Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, England and Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in Aotearoa (the Māori name for New Zealand). Originally from Los Angeles, he holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of California at Berkeley, and a master’s degree from Harvard University’s Department of History of Art and Architecture, where he is also a doctoral candidate.

2023 Juror’s Statement

To make art is to enter an ecosystem that has all kinds of branches, categories, and functions. Every niche has its own history, implied values, and measures of success. As a juror for an exhibition like this, I try to take these shifting criteria into account. What I do enjoy seeing is work that has a clear voice and an elegant relationship between form and idea. I suppose that people make art because they have a drive to put something into the world that wasn’t there before. The only advice I can give is to find the idea that drives you, be responsive to your materials, and take whatever risk you need to put it out there. Then keep practicing.
— Juror Tyler Cann
