Special Guest Instructor: Pat Hickman

This workshop will encourage participants to begin to explore two openwork textile structures, known and used around the world. Examples exhibiting ancient survival skills, requiring minimal tools will be shown. Contemporary artists have used both netting and looping in their exploration and visual expression of ideas—creating openwork structures. The workshop will be an experience in discovering and questioning, and will suggest ongoing ways of working after the workshop is over.

No previous knowledge of textiles or this textile structure is required, just curiosity and a willingness to explore and learn. All media welcome.

Instructor Bio:

Pat Hickman, Professor Emerita of Art, University of Hawaii; Since 2006, she has lived in the Lower Hudson Valley, NY. Hickman’s work is in major collections, including the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, the Oakland Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Denver Art Museum, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and the Hawaii State Art Museum. Her gate commission, Nets of Makali’i–Nets of the Pleiades, stands at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Hickman twice received NEA grants. In 1998, she received an Individual Visual Arts Fellowship from The Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Since 2005, Fellow of the American Craft Council. President of TSA (2008-2010). She served on the National Basketry Organization Board.(2018-2021). Hickman curated two traveling exhibits: Innerskins/Outerskins: Gut and Fishskin and Baskets: Redefining Volume and Meaning.
