We are incredibly lucky to have ELIZABETH WICHMANN-WALCZAK returning to DAC! Last year, she shared her own life story of being the first American drama students allowed into Mao’s China, her controversial studies in the complex art form of Jingju (Beijing opera:dance, drama, acting, martial arts, and singing all combined), and her career at UH Manoa staging some these classic tales in English with students training intensely with Jingju masters. Since retiring, China has declared her a living treasure.
About the tales:
THE CONCUBINE DROWNS HER SORROWS unfolds when the Emperor decides NOT to come spend the night with a favored concubine, who drinks to save face, but ends up revealing more than she wishes. This was the role taught to Elizabeth when she was a student in China. Photos of her (in full make-up & costume) in this role appeared on the cover of innumerable magazines in China, making her one of the most famous people in the country at that time! In the telling, much of the court life of old China is revealed.
THE WHITE SNAKE is an almost 2,000 year-old folk tale about a celestial snake spirit who, with her friend and attendant the Green Snake spirit, decides to descend to earth as a woman to experience human love. In finding it she also encounters opposition from conservative religious forces, and must fight bitterly for the sweet family she creates.
