Join us for a very special session with crosscultural tattoo artist Tricia Allen, this June. She will tell us about her lifelong fascination with tattoos, her early days, and her journeys and travels to Tahiti, then the Marquesas and Rapa Nui in 1991, as well as the styles and vocabulary of tattooing (traditional and modern forms),
including excerpts from her two books, The Polynesian Tattoo Today and Tattoo Traditions of Hawaii. They remain major influences on the explosion and popularization of the tattoo art we know today.
About Tricia Allen:
Tricia Allen is adjunct faculty for the University of Hawai'i at Windward Community College, where she has taught Pacific Island Studies since 2013. In addition to her academic background, Allen has found a practical application in which she can utilize her expertise: she is an accomplished tattoo artist. Allen has tattooed nearly 10,000 members of the Polynesian community. Her work has taken her to Samoa, Aotearoa (New Zealand), New Caledonia, the Society Islands, the Marquesas, and Rapa Nui, as well as to numerous museums and institutions abroad. She has lectured extensively for
institutions including the University of Hawai'i, the Hawai'i State Library, the University of Wyoming, the UCLA School of Art, the Hawaiian Anthropological
Association, the Honolulu Academy of Art, the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, and the Peabody Museum at Salem, as well as onboard the cruise ship Aranui and at numerous symposia and conferences. Her publications include Tattoo Traditions of Hawai'i, winner of the Reader's Choice award from the Hawai'i Book Publishers Association. Her second title, The Polynesian Tattoo Today, was even more successful, winning two first-place awards. She has also published extensively in both academic journals and general-interest publications.
