Join artist Amber Aguirre for a special talk on her new exhibition, “Marginalized: Portraits in Identity and Sign,” on view in the Courtyard Gallery from September 2-26.
This exhibition reworks the traditional portrait bust, historically used to honor society's elite, to instead celebrate people marginalized for differing from dominant social and cultural norms. Rather than defining subjects by the discrimination they've faced, Aguirre emphasizes the empathy, courage, wisdom, and resilience born from their experiences, prompting viewers to reflect on who society chooses to honor and why.
Each bust also incorporates an American Sign Language sign representing part of the subject's marginalized identity, a deliberate choice, since ASL itself has historically faced marginalization.
